SAFE AT SCHOOL?
- What are the threats that the school is responding to with these security measures? What is the data that suggests actual threats have increased and need a new response? What impact are these new policies supposed to have? Who are they intended to deter? What data is being monitored to determine whether these measures will have the desired impact?
- How do specific policies keep us safer? Specifically how do a) students wearing I.D.s at all times to enter and once within the school and b) an armed police officers within the buildings address or mitigate threats?
- In what way were the previous security arrangements determined to be insufficient? For example, unlike many urban schools, Lab has a large, well-trained police force just outside its doors in the form of the UCPD. Why isn’t this enough?
- What are the effects of these security policies on the school culture and community? How are these being documented and measured?
- What precisely is the financial impact; what are these measures costing us? How much are we spending, and how does that impact the school’s educational mission?
